The moment I realized my whitepapers were just sales brochures in disguise
It hit me after a prospect in Austin quoted our own gated stats back at me like they were facts from Gartner, not realizing I'd made up half the benchmarks. Has anyone else had a prospect call them out on fluff in a demo call?

Why would you make up stats that smart buyers can easily spot as fake?

@val_williams they get away with it because most buyers never fact-check anything. It's like that fake light in the grocery store that makes lettuce look greener - we all know it's not real but nobody says anything until someone pokes it.

I once had a sales engineer from Cisco spend 20 minutes on a call trying to prove our "5x faster processing" claim was wrong because he'd timed it with a stopwatch. The stat was pulled from a beta version of the software that crashed every time you tried to export a PDF. I just sat there nodding while he explained clock cycles and thread counts, knowing full well I'd have to call my VP later and admit the whole benchmark was from a spreadsheet where I guessed numbers.
