Update: a prospect in Baltimore said our threat report read like a brochure, and it changed our whole content plan
I used to think gated whitepapers were the only way to get leads, so we pumped out a 22 page "state of the threat landscape" piece every quarter and pushed it hard. Back in March a CISO at a mid-size bank in Baltimore told me straight up, "this reads like a brochure, I already know ransomware is bad." That stung but he was right. We cut the page count to 6, dropped the stock photos of hooded hackers, and started leading with actual numbers from our own incident response cases, like the 3 week gap between patch release and exploit we kept seeing in retail clients. Download-to-lead rate went from 1.8% to 4.3% over two quarters, which I did not expect from making it shorter. Now I argue with peers who say longer always means more value. Curious if anyone else has cut a gated asset way down and seen the same, or if we just got lucky with that one audience.
