Can we talk about the guy at the grocery store who gave me a full lecture on watermelon selection?
Last Tuesday, I'm at Publix in Orlando just trying to pick a watermelon for a cookout. This older dude walks up, sees me tapping one, and goes "you're not doing it right." Then he spends 10 minutes telling me how to thump, feel the weight, look for the field spot. I just stood there holding the melon while he demonstrated on like 4 different ones. He finally picked one, handed it to me, and walked off. Has anyone else had a random stranger give unsolicited advice on something this simple?

That tapping thing is funny cause I've seen people thump them like they're auditioning for a watermelon band.

Bet watch someone do it with a cantaloupe next time and see if they get the same hollow sound. Nobody ever questions why people thump fruit like it's some kind of scientific test. It's just something we do because our grandparents did it and nobody bothered to ask if it actually works. I've thumped a thousand watermelons in my life and I'm pretty sure I bought a bad one every single time anyway. The whole thing is just theater we put on so the farmer thinks we know what we're doing.
