People who press the crosswalk button after it's already lit

There's a button at the intersection of 5th and Oak that lights up when it's active, and I watch folks press it 2 or 3 more times like it's a video game combo. The light doesn't change any faster, I've timed it from my lunch break bench for a week straight. Do people think the first press didn't register or do they just need something to do with their hands?
