Used to never preheat my cast iron skillet until a buddy called me out for sticking eggs every time

After he showed me his perfectly non-stick fried egg in a dry pan last Tuesday, I finally started giving it a good 5 minutes on medium heat and now I feel dumb for all those scrubbing sessions I could have skipped.

Is 5 minutes really enough to get it fully heated through though? I usually give mine a solid 10 minutes on medium low and the eggs slide around like they're on glass. You might still be getting hot spots if you're rushing it.
