Why does nobody talk about the loud exhale before someone starts talking on speakerphone
Waiting at the DMV on Spring St last Tuesday, guy two seats over answers his phone on speaker. But before he even says hello, there is this huge sigh. Like a deflating tire. Then he talks for 12 solid minutes while the whole room listens. Here is what hit me: the sigh is the tell. It means the person is settling in for a long one and everyone nearby is about to be held hostage. I started counting them in my head and got to four before my number got called. Is this just a Midwest thing or does it happen everywhere?
