Forgot to check my sourdough starter for a week

It grew a fuzzy green hat and I had to toss it.

Recall that mold on sourdough starter means it's spoiled. I read that the good microbes die off without regular feedings. Tossing it was the only safe choice.

Scrape off the fuzzy part and keep going, that's what my grandma always did. Mold happens on lots of foods and we don't throw the whole thing out. A bit of surface mold on starter isn't the same as it being rotten inside. Seems like we toss things too fast these days instead of seeing what can be saved.

Ever try scraping it off? I did that once and my starter was totally fine after a few feeds.
