Heard a brewer in Portland say 'your airlock is a pressure gauge, not a decoration'
It made me realize I was just watching for bubbles instead of actually checking the water level and pressure changes. I started marking the side of my airlock with a sharpie to track the liquid level, and it's way easier to spot a stalled ferment now. Anyone else have a simple trick for keeping an eye on active fermentation?

Marking the liquid level with a sharpie is a solid idea. I used to just shake the carboy and hope for the best, which told me nothing except that I need to work out more. It's a much better system.

Honestly, it's wild how many things we just glance at instead of really checking. Like the gas light in my car, I used to wait for it to be solid red before even thinking about a station. Now I notice the little empty line on the gauge way earlier. Same with my plants, I'd just look to see if they were green, not actually check the soil for dryness. That sharpie trick is just making the invisible visible.

It's a good reminder to slow down and actually look at things. We get so used to just scanning our surroundings that details get missed. Making a simple mark forces you to pay proper attention.
