Just read that a single jar of sauerkraut can have more live bacteria than a whole bottle of probiotic pills

I was looking up something about gut health last night and stumbled on a study from a university in Ohio. They tested homemade ferments and found one cup of active sauerkraut can have literally trillions of colony forming units. My store-bought probiotic says it has 50 billion per serving, so that's a crazy difference. It made me look at my half gallon of kraut on the counter totally differently. Has anyone else seen numbers like this or tested their own batches?

Makes you wonder why we even buy those pills. I've been making my own kraut for years and always figured it was better, but those numbers are wild. The stuff in the fridge is basically a live culture bomb. Kinda funny how the old ways keep beating modern science at its own game.

Live culture bomb" is a good way to put it, but I'm with miles_garcia on this one. That wild mix in kraut might not be what your gut actually needs to fix a specific problem.

Disagree with the idea that old ways always beat science. @logan_young29, those pills have studied, specific strains for things like IBS, while kraut's bacteria is a wild mix. You don't know exactly what you're getting or if those trillions will even survive your stomach acid to help. The pills are made to get there. My doctor said the consistent dose matters for actually fixing gut issues, not just eating random probiotics.
