So my red cabbage ferment started smelling like a barnyard after I opened it... any ideas?

Well that's just your cabbage trying to be a farm animal I guess. Red cabbage can get real funky if you let it sit too long with the lid loose or if your brine wasn't strong enough. I'd say if it doesn't smell like rotten eggs or look fuzzy on top you're probably fine, but that barnyard whiff is usually just some wild yeast having a party in there.

Agreed with @king.robin - tossed some funky red cabbage last week that gave off that same barnyard smell.

Read in some fermentation group that barnyard smell means sulfur compounds are breaking down.
