I finally get why you need a full face shield for pouring
For years, I just wore my safety glasses and thought the big shield was extra. Then, last month at the big plant in Gary, I was helping old Joe on a big pour. A piece of the mold broke and a splash of metal hit my shield. It was just a small splash, but it hit right where my eye would have been. Joe just looked at me and said, 'Glasses keep dust out. A shield keeps your face on.' That stuck with me. It happened so fast, and that shield was totally marked up after. Now I won't touch a ladle without one. Anyone else have a close call that made you change your gear for good?

Man, you ever have a moment where you realize you've been an idiot for years? I used to skip the face shield for quick jobs, thinking it was just extra stuff to slow me down. Then I caught a hot chip right in the middle of my safety glasses lens from a grinder. It didn't get through, but it scared me so bad I almost dropped the tool. That was my wake up call. Now I feel naked without the full shield, even for a thirty second cut. It's just not worth the risk.

My uncle ran a shop for 40 years, never wore a shield.
