Spent 2 years pouring molds with the wrong sand mix

I was over at Jones Metal in Tulsa last week watching some old timer set up his floor work and noticed he was using way less water in his green sand than I ever did. He asked what my moisture level was and when I told him around 4% he just shook his head and showed me his 2.5% mix that held together way better. Has anyone else had that moment where you realized you had been doing a basic step wrong for years?

Last Tuesday I got a call from a local scrapyard in Cleveland saying a guy paid cash for the whole pallet of bronze I had prepped for 3 hours. I had sorted and cleaned it from an old job, about 50 pounds of good shavings and chunks. Found out later he was reselling it to art students at the community college for double the price. Has anyone else had flippers swoop in on your scrap before you even got paid properly?

Took me 4 hours to fix a ladle spout that should have been a 30 minute job

I was on a pour last Tuesday in Toledo and the ladle spout was just dripping like crazy. I kept messing with the angle thinking the problem was in my pour technique. Turns out the spout had a tiny crack letting air in the whole time. After I finally ground it out and re-lined it the pour went perfect. Wish I had just stopped after the first bad pour and inspected the spout instead of trying to muscle through it. Has anyone else chased a problem for hours only to find it was something simple you missed at the start?

Everyone keeps saying green sand is dead but I just finished a 47 piece run with it yesterday

I run a small shop outside Pittsburgh and people keep telling me to switch to air set or resin for everything. But I just poured 47 valve bodies in green sand yesterday and only had 2 rejects from gas porosity. That is a 95% success rate which is better than some guys I know getting with shell molds. My question is who else is still getting good numbers with traditional green sand on complex parts?

PSA: Ditch the fancy parting sand, just use plain ol' flour

I was cleaning up my station yesterday and found an old tally sheet stuck to the back of my furnace log. I'd been marking it every time I tapped a riser on our big gray iron pour line. It mattered because I realized I'd done that exact motion, with the same 8-pound hammer, over a thousand times without really thinking about it. People keep skipping the pre-heat on their pouring ladles and it's wrecking the iron temperature.

Got fed up with core box vents clogging on our big gray iron castings

Every time we poured those 200-pound gear blanks, the vents would fill halfway and we'd get blowback. I tried something dumb and drilled a tiny 1/16 inch hole from the side of the vent into the main cavity, about an inch from the top. It gave the gas a second way out and the last batch poured clean, no spitting at all. Has anyone else tried a relief hole like that, or is there a better fix?

For years, I just wore my safety glasses and thought the big shield was extra. Then, last month at the big plant in Gary, I was helping old Joe on a big pour. A piece of the mold broke and a splash of metal hit my shield. It was just a small splash, but it hit right where my eye would have been. Joe just looked at me and said, 'Glasses keep dust out.
