The day a pigeon tried to nest in our cupola exhaust fan

Last Tuesday at the old Trenton plant, we fired up the core room furnace and this awful screeching sound started. Turns out a pigeon had built a nest right in the fan housing overnight. We had to shut down for almost two hours while maintenance fished out a mess of twigs and one very angry bird. Has anyone else had wildlife cause a shutdown like that?

Our old warehouse in Akron had a family of raccoons get into the main electrical panel. They chewed through some wires and shorted out the whole lighting circuit. The cleanup took all day because of the mess they left behind.

How is that just normal maintenance? That's a full shutdown and a biohazard mess. @annaw73's story shows it's a real safety problem, not just a small delay. Animals in electrical panels can cause fires or hurt someone. Calling it routine is ignoring the real risk and cost. You need to seal things up better, not just accept it.

Honestly, that's just part of running an old building. You can't expect to keep every single gap sealed up tight against nature. A couple hour shutdown for a bird is just normal maintenance time.
