My cousin's kid asked me why the sand molds look like giant sandcastles

I was showing my 8-year-old nephew around our shop in Toledo last weekend, and he pointed at a big cope and drag setup and said, 'That's just like the moat I built at the beach!' It made me realize how much we take the basic process for granted after seeing it every day. What's the simplest way you've ever explained pouring metal to someone who had no clue?

My go-to is telling people it's like making a really heavy, permanent ice cube. (My own first attempt was more of a modern art piece, honestly.)

But what did you tell the kid...

Seriously, a permanent ice cube?
