My foreman insists on using a 3/8 inch rod for all our risers, but I think it's overkill for smaller castings.
He says it's about consistent strength, but I've seen less waste and cleaner breaks using 5/16 on pieces under 50 lbs. Anyone have data to back up either side?

Check your insurance policy's minimum spec.

Seriously, @anthony129 is onto something important. People forget that some policies won't cover a claim if your security setup is outdated. It's a loophole that could leave you totally unprotected.
