My foreman said my sand mix was too wet for the core molds, and he was dead right.

He pulled me aside after a pour and pointed at the crumbled edges on a batch of manifolds. I started adding 2% less water to the binder, and the scrap rate dropped like a rock. Anyone else had a simple fix that saved a ton of rework?

So was the 2% just a guess, or did you actually measure the moisture content after that?

Remember that guy who kept blowing out his sand molds? He just started pre-warming his patterns and it fixed everything.

Oh man, @the_miles, that's such a simple fix but it makes total sense. Warming the pattern stops that cold shock from busting the mold.
