My foreman told me to add a bit of borax to the sand mix for a stubborn core, and it actually worked

Borax is a neat trick for that. It acts like a flux, lowering the melting point of the sand's silica just enough to get a good sinter on the core surface. You see it a lot in art foundries for really detailed pieces, like thin tree branches or fine text. Just a tiny bit too much though, and you'll weaken the whole thing, so it's a careful balance. Old-timers used to swear by adding a little powdered glass for the same reason.

Honestly, it's like that with so many things now, where the right amount helps but a little extra just ruins it.

That powdered glass trick sounds like a real art form.
