My shellac flakes clumped up into a solid brick after I left the jar open overnight.

I had to carefully chip pieces off with a putty knife and dissolve them in fresh alcohol, which took almost an hour yesterday, so has anyone found a better way to salvage dried-out finish?

Wait you left the jar open overnight on purpose? That's asking for trouble! Shellac turns into a rock so fast, I'm honestly impressed you managed to chip it apart at all. Next time maybe try grating it with a cheese grater if it happens again, it dissolves way quicker as little shavings.

My grandfather used to keep his shellac in a metal coffee can with the lid hammered on tight. He still had to use a putty knife to break the skin every single time. The smell of that shop is permanently linked to the sound of him chipping away at it.

My buddy just threw his brick in a blender with some alcohol, worked shockingly well.
