Watching a restoration demo at the county fair convinced me to always strip paint with a heat gun first, not just chemical stripper.

The demonstrator, a guy from a local guild, showed how the heat gun lifted 8 layers of old paint from a 1920s dresser in under an hour, revealing pristine oak underneath that the stripper would have just gummed up.

Pristine oak underneath" sounds way better than my last attempt, which just revealed my own shame and some weird sticky goo.

Yeah, a heat gun was a total game changer for me too. That goo @hannahsingh mentioned is the worst, and the heat just turns it to dust you can brush off. Saved an old door that way last summer.

Feel your pain, that sticky goo is the worst.
